Олег и его семья

Олег - москвич, он родился в Москве. Сейчас он учится в университете. Он студент-биолог. Его родители живут в Москве. Отец Иван Сергеевич работает на заводе, он инженер. Мама, Нина Петровна, врач. Она работает в больнице. Сестра Таня ещё учится в школе. Нина Петровна раньше жила в Саратове (FYI Саратов - a port on the Volga; the capital of Saratov Province), её родители и сейчас живут там. Олег и Таня часто бывают в Саратове, а их дедушка и бабушка часто пишут и иногда бывают в Москве. И в Москве, и в Саратове они все вместе часто бывают в театре, в цирке, в кино.

DIALOGUE

Джон: Олег, ты москвич?
Олег: Да, я родился в Москве.
Джон: А твои родители?
Олег: Папа москвич, а мама раньше жила в Саратове,
её родители, мои дедушка и бабушка, и сейчас живут там.

GRAMMAR

The Past Tense of the Verb

-Где они жили? "Where did they live?"
-В Саратове. "In Saratov."

The English counterparts of the Russian past tense are the Past Indefinite, the Past Continuous, the Present Perfect, and the Past Perfect.

чита-ть -> чита + л -> читал

The past tense of verbs whose infinitive ends in -ть is formed by adding the suffix -л- to the infinitive stem.

Note. - In the past tense verds do not change for person; they change for number (я читал, мы читали) and gender (он читал, она читала).

Note. - The verb быть is not used in the present tense.

The Prepositional of Nouns

In answers to the question где? adverbs of place are used (Где мама? - Она дома) or nouns in the prepositional case with the preposition в or на.

Note. - 1. A small number of masculine nouns take the ending -y in the prepositional: в шкафу, на полу, в углу, в саду, в лесу, на мосту, etc.
2. The nouns кино, пальто, метро, кафе, кофе do not change for number and case.
